So I had to dig out procmon since event viewer was of no help.
Found that even though I had set it up to save to d:fooWsusUpdatesWsusContent it was trying to save to D:WsusUpdatesWsusContent
since I was lazy, I just created the structure it wanted and it was happy again.
The odd part is that the windows update published client is still saved in D:fooWsusUpdatesUpdateServicesPackages

CAS (don't ask.. if I could redo it I would) with a primary site
main SUP in the CAS, Primary uses CAS as upstream.
I noticed that SCEP wasn't updating, (we have a failsafe of no updates, get from internet after 3 days) and I started looking at the WU logs.
I am getting the following error on multiple items. I have rebuilt the SUP from scratch and I'm still getting it.

I've seen where resetting WSUS will fix it (wsusutil reset), but I've tried that, removed the role, removed WSUS, removed the DB, made sure that the two KBs for Win10 were installed because those were some of the updates failing.

And it seems that most Windows updates succeed except for those above.
